Colombo is Sri Lanka’s capital city but it definitely lacks something. Unlike Bangkok or London it doesn’t have that buzz, or an endless amount of sights to behold (or the endless amount of girly bars for that matter!!!), it is perfectly fine but there just isn’t loads to do, so you really only need a couple of days as somewhere to crash after you land.
Oh and I’m quite proud of this little analogy; if Bangkok is the Bart Simpson of Asia then Colombo is most definitely the more sensible Lisa…You can actually tell that Sri Lanka was run by westerners for such a long time, as it has that structure and organisation that you just don’t get in a lot of other parts of Southeast Asia (like Thailand!). Things actually work here!
The traveller scene is also pretty different, slightly more mature people looking for more than just getting smashed every night, which is much more my scene…well sort of 😉
I spent my first non jet lagged day taking in the few things Colombo did have to offer; my first curry & rice lunch, a walk down Galle Face Green which runs parallel to the sea, and the museum.
I was hoping to catch the sunset but it was a little too early once I had finished and I couldn’t be bothered to hang around, so I headed back to my awesome hostel. Did I mention BED Hostels was the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at?? well it was, so now you know! Actually I take that back, Gili Backpackers in Indonesia remains my true hostel love, but BED now comes a very close second!
Anyway, after that I pretty much stayed in the hostel as it was much more entertaining, the only other day trip I did was white water rafting with some of the guys I met there, and that has been the best day I’ve had in Sri Lanka so far!
Half way through the rafting we stopped at a waterfall which we proceeded to jump/slide down to get back to the raft! It was awesome, and by far the best waterfall experience I’ve had in Asia. The day wasn’t that cheap though at 5000 rupees (about £25) but it was a day well spent nonetheless.
Sadly my time at BED Hostel came to an end on Saturday and after a very elongated goodbye (well the rain had something to do with that!), I reluctantly left and moved onwards, by bus, to the beach…Hikkaduwa (aka Hikka).
Hikkaduwa was described to me as a surfer town…yes you can surf, but I didn’t see many surfers! (yes I was hoping to do a bit of perving! lol). I guess we are coming into low season now so maybe that’s why, anyway Hikka was pretty cool and my second night there was just ridiculous, it went something like this:
- Most amazing sunset I’ve ever seen (not exaggerating!!!! see below)
- Befriended some local guys
- Saw baby turtles migrating down the beach to the sea (up there with some of the best things I’ve ever seen – video coming soon!)
- Partied with said locals at a local beach bar; Top Secret, which finally offered me up the gasoline smelling, toes in the sand, shisha, pool & beer experience I have been craving since I left Asia last summer!
- Late night Rotti snack…yum
All in all it was a great evening/night! Hikkaduwa is a cool beach town despite the overload of tourist guesthouses and restaurants, and I would definitely recommend a visit if/when you are in Sri Lanka.
Check out the short video I made of Hikka including the sunset & baby turtles!!:
