5 of the best beaches in Southeast Asia: The beaches in Southeast Asia are famous, think beautiful white sand, crystal clear water and bright blue skies to leave you feeling like you are in paradise! Add into the mix how cheap Southeast Asia is and you have the perfect recipe for lazying away your days doing nothing but sipping on a coconut whilst soaking up the gorgeous Asian sunshine.
I’ve spent a total of 9 months travelling this amazing area of the world over the last 1.5 years and think I visited enough of the beaches, with the exception of the Philippines which I’m sure could have a whole post to itself (!!), to say I think the following 5 are the best of the best and should not be missed when you are in this part of the world!
1. Gili Trawangan (East side), Indonesia
This whole island, just off the coast of Lombok, is basically my favourite place in Southeast Asia and I wrote a whole post about this paradise island here if you want to find out more, but for now I’ll just leave you with these photos:
2. Koh Wai, Thailand
Thailand’s best kept secret HAS to be Koh Wai! This almost uninhabited island, located in the Ko Chang archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand, is simply AMAZING!!! and in my opinion one of the best places to swim with the infamous luminous plankton due to the lack of lights past 11pm:
3. Koh Rong, Cambodia
I visited Koh Rong last year and it was a magical place, but is quickly becoming overrun with backpackers which means more rubbish and people, BUT Long Beach on the other side of the island was, and still is, stunning! with not a single shop, restaurant or bar in sight! I’ve also heard Koh Rong Samleon(the next island along) is a must see (on this years bucket list!!):
4. Otres Beach, Cambodia
One of my all time favs; Otres Beach is is just up the road from party hard Serendipity Beach but could not be further away in terms of vibe. It’s chilled, hippy atmosphere means lazy (recovery) days after a heavy night in Serendipity is just what the doctor ordered. A few (not too many) Cambodian ladies stroll the beach selling yummy shellfish, juicy fruit, bracelets and massages, loungers are free and there aren’t too many people around to disturb you. Water sports available further up the beach as to not disturb sunbathers & swimmers:
5. The Secret Beach in Mirissa, Sri Lanka
Hidden away just past the main beach in Mirissa (which has a lot of waves) is a small hidden relaxed beach which few people (currently!) know exists. It was such a find! Find out more about it here, but in the meantime start your drooling now:
When I visit the Philippines later this year I’m sure this list might change, but for now…Enjoy!!
