The observant of you may have noticed that there may be a potential teeny tiny change to my plans to move to Thailand next year.
My boyfriend is currently down to the last few applicants for an amazing contract job in Dubai…this means that rather than moving straight to Thailand together in April as planned, he would move to Dubai this side of Christmas and then I would go and join him in Dubai for 6 months from April, before we move to Thailand later in the year.
To be completely frank this is scaring the shit out of me, and not for all the reasons you might expect.
Firstly, I actually think 6 months in Dubai would be an amazing experience…I’ve never been before and so it would be brilliant to experience a part of the world I know nothing about. I’ll also be full time blogging by this time so a stint in a new country will be exciting from both a personal and professional point of view.
My fears really stem from 2 things:
1. Money..as usual!!
Everything I have planned; leaving my current Marketing career, having saved enough money to live in Thailand for a year pretty comfortably, whilst I set up my new career as a travel blogger, now needs a re-think. The money I will have saved might be a lot for Thailand but it certainly won’t get me very far in Dubai!
This means my new plan will involve me being in Dubai for a week or 2 at a time (pretty much all I can afford based on my savings) but then spending the rest of my time travelling…this is great BUT it will mean a lot of time away from my boyfriend 🙁
2. The Culture
To be honest I’m not really liking everything I have heard about Dubai. As a western woman I think it might be quite a restrictive place to live and the reason I love Thailand so much is that it is so laid back!
I have also heard a lot about unwanted male attention :/
I going to have to wear clothes I wouldn’t choose (in that heat!) and not be drunk in public (one of my favourite past times!), and living with my boyfriend is actually illegal! This does not bode well…
The whole point of breaking out of the UK, setting up a career that allows me to work for myself and moving to such a laid back country is that I’m moving AWAY from such a restrictive environment…Dubai puts me into an environment that sounds even more restrictive.
So, in short, I’m terrified I’m going to hate it…but I guess everything is an adventure so if he gets the job of course I’ll embrace it.
So watch this space for an announcement pretty soon on whether it’s Thailand or Dubai…fate, over to you 😉
