Tomorrow is Valentines Day, and to be honest I think it’s an over-hyped, contrived event pushed by gift companies to make money, but it is a time of year where we all stop to celebrate that little thing called love, so it can’t be all bad.
So my little present to all you (as you are the little loves in my life) is my story of how I found love on the road 🙂
As you should (hopefully) know by now, I spend the first half of 2014 travelling Southeast Asia. A trip that was borne out of my dissatisfaction with how my life was rolling. A large part of why I left was that my love life wasn’t quite going to plan, and I just needed to shake things up a bit!
Songkran is a 3-4 day water celebration to bring in the Thai New Year, that basically takes the form of a full on water fight the length and breadth of Thailand! It is more fun that you could possibly imagine!
Anyway, I got myself up to backpacker haven Deejai Backpackers, and on the night before Songkran really got started, I found myself sitting at Deejai’s bar waiting for a friend. Stone cold sober and a little uncomfortable being on my own, I was soon asked how I was doing by a random guy getting drinks at the bar.
I said I was fine and thanked him, but to be honest he looked like a scruffy, chavvy Brit backpacker, and one that I would normally steer clear of, so I cut the conversation short and off he went.
Half an hour later and with no sign of my friend I was still sitting at the bar, and he was soon back for more drinks. He tried to talk to me again, but again I tried to get rid of him as he proceeded to inform me he was pretty high on drugs! “Weirdo” I thought…
At that point my friend finally arrived and I turned my back to him whilst I proceeded to tell her this bar was full of weirdo druggies!
We ordered drinks as she looked around to find a couple of people she knew. She spotted them…as I turned around to see where she was pointing my heart sank. They were sitting with the druggie guy!!
We walked over and she proceeded to introduce me to her friends, and eventually I was introduced to ‘druggie guy’ aka ‘G’. I shook his hand and tried to pretend that I hadn’t acted like a complete snob bitch at the bar :/ and he politely acted like he hadn’t noticed!
I ended up sitting next to him and got to talking. I had totally mis-judged him! He was a 34 year old, super switched on English guy that was temporarily living in Chiang Mai. He was very confident and had no agenda whatsoever (not normally the case with most guys I came across on my travels!).
He was so refreshing to talk to and we actually had loads in common, so much so that when my friend and the rest of the girls said they were going to another bar, I was so enthralled (and had just bought a drink) that I decided to stay and talk some more! G assured them that he would bring me down to the bar in a bit…safe & sound 🙂
We never did end up going to that bar, in fact we ended up talking all night!
The next day he asked me if I fancied hanging out for a while, and it turned out to be the best few days ever….we had so much fun acting like kids with supersoakers, running around town getting soaked and partying!
I was due to go up to Pai following Songkran and casually asked if G wanted to come with me, and he did! After that we basically travelled the whole of Thailand & Laos together over a 2 month period and fell in love 🙂
Soppy I know sorry! Anyway we ended up back in London together and now have plans to permanently move back to Thailand this year!!
Happy Valentines Day to you & yours 😉
Have you found love on the road, or do you have a story of finding love that you would like to share…put it in the comments below people 🙂
