Oh how i love Holland…In August this year i treated my other half to a birthday trip to the amazing Mysteryland Festival in Haarlemmermeer, near Amsterdam. It was only a day festival so we extended it to a long (messy) weekend in Amsterdam.
Up until this point i have only attended festies in the UK and with The Secret Garden Party firmly up at the top of my favourites list Greg suggested i might like Mysteryland which was a similarly themed festival…think wonder, amazement, glitter and randomness plus superstar DJs.
I couldn’t wait so went about planning. Now it was soon to become clear to me that visiting a festival outside of the UK would be a much larger expense, mostly due to the cost of getting there, staying off site in a hotel and the Euro isn’t exactly that favourable against the Pound, so the costs soon racked up (i reckon we spent about £1000 each for the full 4.5 days) but it was such a good weekend i would happily repeat it. Greg had a great birthday, we got right back to what we do best (party!) and all the stresses of the last few months (i’ll save that for another post!) melted away.
The majority of the festival was spent wandering around, as i find i always do at festivals… i never seem to be able to stay in one place for longer than 5 mins for some reason, perhaps its the thought of all the other things i’m missing out on plus the fact that it’s been at least 30 mins since i went to the toilet last! lol
The festival was in a fairly spread out site where between one half of the festival and the other you have to cross a motorway bridge (!!) but they had cleverly covered up the railings with pretty festival bunting so you couldn’t really see the road and pop the festival bubble you were submerged in, but a day festival only ever really allows you to submerge so far and i think for this type of festival (boutique/hippie) a full weekend is needed to really feel like you have ‘fallen down the rabbit hole’.
Another big difference from UK festivals is the payment system which is done via tokens – i wasn’t massively impressed by the time it took to line up to purchase these (30 mins of wasted partying time!) as everyone did it at the same set of booths near the entrance and there was no signnage to tell us there were other locations to purchase from, but it did save us getting out cash the whole time.
Anyway, it was a feast for the eyes as well as ears and a lot of fun was had by all… check out the Official Mysteryland 2014 After Movie:
