What it feels like for a girl…in this world:
“Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots, ’cause it’s OK to be a boy, but for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, ’cause you think that being a girl is degrading, but secretly you’d love to know what it’s like…” – Madonna
This perhaps isn’t the reality in the west these days but it was once, and still is in many countries around the world today.
But it’s hard being a woman wherever you live.
Quite a lot of the time I actually wish I had been born a boy, because I just think men get an easier ride in life. Don’t get me wrong being a woman has some amazing perks…errr boobs! but it makes everything a lot tougher…let me give you a few examples:
Solo Female Travel
Why have you never heard of the phrase ‘solo male travel’? They are thousands of men travelling by themselves, but it’s just ‘normal’. Now that women are starting to do it, it’s a ‘thing’! Travelling solo as a female brings with it a whole host of other issues;
I’m always worried if I go off on a hike on my own, or try and find a secret beach/viewpoint alone, or just trying to get home at night safely. This is the same issue that happens at home and I’m sick of always looking over my shoulder, or worrying because I am more likely to be targeted than a guy and I can’t defend myself like a man can.
I haven’t had this issue myself as I believe it is more rife in South America, but apparently just walking down the road during the day in non-alluring clothing will still invite constant, rude cat calling from the local men. Alex in Wanderland writes a good article about just that here.
Ok, perhaps not the biggest issue but in Asia I get stared at a lot. Cause I’m blonde and I’m female, and I’m usually doing something you would never see the local women doing, like riding a motorbike or something. STOP IT .. IT’S RUDE!
Getting photographed by strangers:
Again, similar to the above but so annoying…I think I’ll start charging. Do men have this issue?? Oh and the other day some 40 year old guy asked if he could take a photo of me & my friend in our bikinis on the beach…err fuck off please!
The Glass Ceiling
I won’t bang on about this but you know full well in the workplace men still rule. Even in the most westernised, forward thinking ones. Men occupy the majority of company board seats, they get paid more for the same jobs etc etc. It is getting better but at snails pace, and in non westernised countries they are centuries behind equality in the workplace.
Annnd, I know a lot of woman get jobs because of how they look…I don’t doubt it’s helped me along the way (yup I just said that!). Woman most definitely get judged by how they look when going for interviews, even if it isn’t a conscious factor from the male interviewer.
Of course this isn’t true of everywhere, but it still happens in a lot of places.
Being Constantly Judged
It’s exhausting, let’s be honest! The constant beauty, fashion, diets fads, celebrity culture we are slapped in the face with on a daily basis means we are constantly judging ourselves and each other. It’s awful!
Who gives a shit…everyone that’s who. And sadly the ones that don’t care are branded weird or ‘alternative’ types.
Come on people!!!
Periods, Hormones & Emotions
Well, the fairer sex (!! why are we fairer by the way??!!) definitely gets it’s fair share of brain malfunctions EVERY MONTH!!!! I mean, really…as soon as I start to feel normal again, the cycle starts all over again. Men…we do not act like total crazy bitches on purposes you know! Well maybe sometimes 😉 and don’t let me even get started on the pain!!! Oh and whilst we are on that subject, err child birth!!!
So it’s ok for you to sleep around but not for me…erm OK! nuff said
Society and my body telling me I should have children
My wise brain is yelling “why the hell would I bring a child into this world”, war, crime, bullying, social media!!! (wow I’m glad I’m not at school in this day & age!) but my body and society around me is telling me I should…it’s a lot of pressure to juggle every day and I wish I could just feel the way men feel about it…they can take it or leave it
Now, this is a bit of a ranty post but that’s the point of having a blog right???!! I also know not everyone will agree with all of this, and I’m sure men have a few things of their own they wish they could swap with us ladies but there you go…do feel free to write your own blog post gents lol or feel free to give me what’s for in the comments below 😉
